How AI credits work

Pro subscribers get every AI feature included — no API key required.

Included with Pro

Your Pro subscription includes 600 AI credits every month. Most AI work is priced by how much text it reads. Revise, line edit, expansion, proofread, and narration scale that way — a small selection costs 1–2 credits, a full scene typically runs 2–6. Dialogue analysis and style operations are 1–3 per run, and Lume, the in-app assistant, is 1 credit per message.

Always quoted first

The app shows you the exact credit figure before any run starts, and credits are only charged on successful completion. Nothing is spent without you seeing the number first.

Need more?

Credit packs are available if you need more than your monthly allowance. Or bring your own API key and use your preferred AI provider directly — no credits needed.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between the two plans?
Bookshaper Basic includes the full writing, organization, formatting, and export experience. Bookshaper Pro adds Lume, an in-app assistant grounded in your manuscript for asking what is canon and thinking out loud about what comes next, plus the Refine tools — Expand, Revise, and Line Edit — a chapter-level Dialogue check, style profiles that keep suggestions in your voice, scene audio narration, AI cover artwork, and 600 monthly credits.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. The free trial includes full access to all features plus 75 AI credits. Download the app to start your free trial.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time. Access continues through the end of your billing cycle.
What are AI credits?
AI credits meter Bookshaper’s AI features. Dialogue analysis and style operations cost 1–3 credits per run; Lume, the in-app assistant, costs 1 credit per message. Revise, line edit, expansion, proofread, and narration scale with how much text you send — a small selection costs 1–2 credits, a full scene typically runs 2–6. Pro includes 600 credits per month, reset each billing cycle. Credits are only charged on successful completion.
What if I run out of credits?
You can purchase credit packs for additional AI work. Packs start at $12.99 for 500 credits. Pack credits are added to your balance immediately and don’t expire at the end of your billing cycle.
Can I use my own AI API key instead?
Yes. Bookshaper supports Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) mode for Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI (GPT), Google (Gemini), Mistral, Groq, OpenRouter, and Together.ai. OpenRouter and Together.ai give you access to hundreds of open-source and frontier models — including Llama, DeepSeek, Qwen, and Mixtral — through a single key. Connect your key in Settings, and analysis requests go directly to the provider at their rates — no Bookshaper credits needed. BYOK also covers cover art: standard cover generation runs on your own OpenAI (GPT Image) or bfl.ai (FLUX) key, and Pro AI covers — with your title and author rendered right into the artwork — run on your own Ideogram key.
What payment methods do you accept?
Credit and debit cards through Stripe, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay where supported.
Are my manuscripts used for AI training?
We don't authorize AI providers to train on your manuscripts, and because these features run on third-party AI platforms, this relies on each provider honoring its API terms. You retain full ownership and all rights to your work.

Bookshaper uses AI for proofreading, revision, line editing, expansion, dialogue analysis, and select generation features (such as back-cover blurbs and cover concepts). Your manuscripts are stored locally. We do not authorize AI providers to train on your manuscripts, and we configure available no-retention controls on every request; because these features run on third-party AI platforms, this protection relies on each provider honoring its default API terms.
